In this podcast, we look at the Occupy Denver movement as it was on October 21, which, thanks to Occupy Oakland and other recent developments, feels a little like ancient history.
The Occupy Wall Street movement, which migrated to Denver back in September, has continued to spread across the globe. But what the heck are these people so angry about, anyway? Aren’t they just a bunch of college kids skipping class? Or is OWS part of a worldwide cultural shift, connected to Arab Spring and other recent global protests?
Regardless of the movement’s aims, Denver isn’t the best place to stage a protest. There’s the Denver Police Department’s intimidating riot gear, the unpredictable weather, the politically independent mindset, and, well, the fact that we’re generally happier than most cities (and more easily distracted by our beautiful surroundings).
The DPD/Occupy Denver face-off conjures memories of Chicano-era icon Corky Gonzalez, who maintained a lower public-protest profile after a particularly violent clash with Denver police in the ’70s. Will today’s protesters face a similar fate?
While occupiers everywhere say they’re a leaderless movement with no official demands, some very clear ones have been posted online, and allegations abound claiming the occupations are masterminded by, among others, the White House, the Democratic National Committee, the Republican National Committee, the Tea Party, and most ironically, Wall Street billionaires like George Soros.
Also this week, in Love + Hate Vanessa gives some love to Mike Stemple’s talk on the Death of Innovation at DEMOGala, Josh loves on the Mayan Theater’s monthly film series, Jared lovingly hates on Forest Room 5, and Ron plugs Google Voice and the Diatribe’s new voicemail number, 720-282-YELL. That’s right, folks. Now you can share your loves and hates with us whenever an extreme emotion strikes.
