This week Jared, John and our special guest, 5280‘s online editor Vanessa Martinez, assess the carnage of the Denver media landscape. First, the physical challenge: Each of us made a point of sitting through as many broadcasts as possible of local TV news. We each took a network and stuck to it.
Other media related topics include: the declining circulation of the Denver Post. Even post-Rocky Mountain News shuttering, their readership is shrinking. Will their online audience and recent partnership with, um, The Onion be enough to reverse the downward spiral?
We also bust out our Ouija Boards and prevaricate on the future of online-only journalism in Colorado.
LOVE AND HATE
Vanessa: Hated on Attorney General John Suthers allowing the Colorado Board of Education to bypass state law and receive federal funding for abstinence only education, which has been proven about as effective in reducing teen pregnancy as the rhythm method.
Jared: Loved on Craigslisp. Thake a thuk, thit’s thunny tho!
John: Hated on the unsustainable and obnoxious salaries of local news anchors including Adele Arakawa (over $500k a year; meteorologist Kathy Sabine (over $400k) and Jim Benneman, now of CBS4 (over $700k).
Joel Warner was in Las Vegas last week; due to the inferior cell phone reception at several brothels he was not able to join us.
